Fixed-Term Assistant Professor – Scene Design

About the role

The Department of Theatre at Michigan State University seeks a full‑time, one‑year fixed‑term faculty member to teach and mentor students in scene design and related disciplines. The appointment may be renewed based on performance and departmental needs.

Key responsibilities

• Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in scene design, media design, scene painting, drafting, and integrative studies in the arts and humanities.
• Develop and deliver introductory technical theatre and production design courses as needed.
• Participate in departmental productions, providing design work or supervising student designers.
• Supervise scenic painters, properties artisans, and graduate design studios.
• Mentor and advise students across design disciplines.
• Maintain an active professional practice in the field.

Required profile

• MFA (or MA) in scenic design preferred; BA/BFA with at least five years of professional experience considered.
• Demonstrated experience teaching at the college level.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD and/or Vectorworks.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Positive attitude and ability to collaborate effectively.
