Environmental Geologist – Field Investigation & Remediation

About the role

North Wind Portage, Inc. seeks an experienced Environmental Geologist to support DOE environmental investigations, remediation, and site surveillance in Ventura County, California. The role involves field sampling, drilling oversight, and coordination of subcontractors to ensure safe and compliant project execution.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct groundwater, soil, and air sampling and monitoring, and collect data for analysis.
• Oversee drilling operations, including investigative borings, monitoring‑well installations, and abandonments.
• Manage heavy‑equipment, construction, and demolition subcontractors on‑site.
• Provide onsite safety leadership, conduct hazard assessments, and ensure compliance with health‑and‑safety protocols.
• Perform weekly surveillance, maintenance, and inspection of DOE‑owned monitoring wells and infrastructure.
• Prepare technical reports, data tables, and field summary documents.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in geology, engineering, or environmental science.
• Minimum 5 years of environmental field experience, with at least 3 years of soil, groundwater, and air sampling.
• Proven ability to manage field projects, subcontractors, and client interactions.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to operate a pick‑up truck or transit van.
• Ability to obtain DOE security clearance and pass background/drug checks.

Required skills

• Groundwater, soil, and air sampling techniques.
• Drilling oversight and monitoring‑well installation.
• HAZWOPER 40‑hour certification with 8‑hour refresher.
• Use of MS Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, Access).
• Operation and maintenance of groundwater extraction/treatment systems.
