Engineering Technician V – Target Area Operator

About the role

North Wind Services is seeking an Engineering Technician V to support the National Ignition Facility at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The role involves installing, aligning, and maintaining complex diagnostic and optical hardware for high‑energy laser experiments.

Key responsibilities

• Install, align, test, and document diagnostic hardware and final optics assemblies up to 70 lb.
• Perform mechanical support, troubleshooting, and maintenance of vacuum and X‑ray systems.
• Handle radiologically contaminated components safely, including use of respirators and confined‑space work.
• Rig and hoist large loads, operate cranes, and manage material handling tasks.

Required profile

• A.A. in Mechanical or Electrical Technologies or equivalent 4+ years experience, or military background in similar systems.
• Ability to work 24/7 shift schedule (3/12‑4/12) and obtain DOE Q‑Level security clearance.
• Detail‑oriented with strong adherence to written procedures and safety protocols.

Required skills

• Mechanical installation and maintenance of vacuum and optical systems.
• Experience with rigging, crane operation, and handling heavy optics.
• Knowledge of computer‑controlled data acquisition and remote control of opto‑mechanical devices.
• Ability to work with radiological hazards and use personal protective equipment.
