Computer Lab Member (Volunteer)

About the role

The Education Justice Project (EJP) operates a dedicated computer lab at Danville Correctional Center, providing a space for incarcerated students to complete assignments, attend for‑credit courses, and participate in workshops. As a member of the lab team you will guide on‑site support staff, collaborate with the advisory committee, and train new instructors to ensure the lab functions as an effective “third space.”

Key responsibilities

• Provide guidance and training for the on‑site computer support team.
• Work with the computer lab advisory committee at the prison.
• Train new EJP instructors on lab usage and policies.
• Ensure the lab efficiently supports its various educational functions.
• Participate in the monthly Pit Crew meetings to offer peer‑to‑peer support and orient new lab users.

Required profile

• Backgrounds that align with incarcerated students (e.g., racial minorities, first‑generation degree holders, low‑income backgrounds).
• Ability to navigate stairs (no elevator) and meet IDOC clearance requirements.

Required skills

• Familiarity with computer lab environments.
• Experience with computer hardware.
