Clinical Facility Dog Handler – Child Life

About the role

The Clinical Facility Dog Handler works on Cleveland Clinic’s Main Campus to deliver goal‑directed Animal‑Assisted Therapy. Using a trained facility dog, the handler supports patients, families and staff across inpatient and outpatient settings, enhancing emotional, behavioral, cognitive and physical well‑being.

Key responsibilities

• Utilize the facility dog to provide therapeutic interventions in various clinical areas, including inpatient units and outpatient clinics.
• Document interactions, program statistics and psychosocial observations in medical records and share relevant information with the care team.
• Plan and implement special events, educational seminars and research collaborations involving the facility dog.
• Maintain all dog‑handling requirements, including health care, grooming, weight management and rest periods.
• Supervise volunteers, students and interns, and participate in individual and group supervision.
• Assist with administrative tasks, inventory control and budget planning related to the program.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Child Life, Recreational Therapy, Child Development or a related field.
• Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) or active Child Life Certification (CCLS).
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 90 days of hire.
• Completion of required training and certification from the Facility Dog Training Placement Organization.
• Comfort working with children and animals.
