Claims & Appeals Officer (Entry Level)

About the role

The Veterans Claims & Appeals Officer represents veterans, dependents, and survivors throughout the VA benefits appeals process. Working under supervision, you will advocate for claimants whose initial VA benefit applications were denied or under‑awarded, ensuring a fair and thorough review. The position requires expert knowledge of VA law, appellate procedures, and related medical and service records.

Key responsibilities

• Review denied claims and analyze complete case files, including service records and medical evidence.
• Gather and interpret supporting documentation to build a strong legal argument.
• Draft formal briefs and represent clients during virtual or in‑person hearings before the VBA, BVA, or higher courts.
• Provide guidance on appeals timelines, procedural requirements, and required documentation.
• Stay current on changes to VA laws, Title 38, and relevant precedent decisions.
• Collaborate with attorneys, medical professionals, and federal or state agency representatives to develop compelling appeals.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and at least two years of related professional experience.
• Military veteran status or extensive experience working with military or veteran populations.
• Knowledge of VA regulations, benefits processes, and related medical conditions.
• Strong analytical, research, and problem‑solving abilities to review complex veteran files.
• Excellent organizational, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and electronic case management systems.
• Ability to work independently and manage a caseload effectively.
