Civil Engineer Trainee – Safety Programs & Engineering

About the role

The Civil Engineer Trainee will support the Bureau of Safety Programs & Engineering in evaluating roadway safety research, revising policies, and developing new safety standards. Working under immediate supervision, the trainee provides technical assistance, administrative support, and training related to work zones, highway‑railroad crossings, vulnerable road users, and roadside treatments.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in reviewing state‑of‑the‑practice research on roadside appurtenances and highway safety.
• Support the revision and creation of standards, procedures, and policy recommendations.
• Prepare technical correspondence and reports on safety issues.
• Conduct on‑site reviews and field inspections as needed.
• Analyze crash data to identify patterns and help develop mitigation measures.

Required profile

• Recent graduate or student in civil engineering or a related field.
• Strong analytical skills with an interest in roadway safety.
• Ability to work under supervision and collaborate with policy development staff.
