Child Life Specialist – Cole Eye Institute

About the role

The Child Life Specialist provides developmentally appropriate education, therapeutic play, and emotional support to pediatric patients and families at the Cole Eye Institute. The role involves collaboration with the interdisciplinary team to enhance the patient experience.

Key responsibilities

• Assess developmental, psychosocial, emotional and cultural needs and deliver age‑appropriate education about medical procedures.
• Provide non‑pharmacological pain management, therapeutic play, and bereavement support.
• Document treatment plans and outcomes in the electronic medical record.
• Plan and implement individual and group therapeutic interventions.
• Maintain and order supplies and equipment as needed.
• Advocate for patient‑ and family‑centered care through communication and partnership.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Child Life or related field.
• Child Life internship of at least 600 hours directed by a Certified Child Life Specialist.
• Professional certification (CCLS) within one year of hire and maintenance thereafter.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within one year of hire.
• Commitment to ongoing professional development and adherence to certification standards.

Required skills

• Proficiency in documenting patient care in electronic medical records.
• Ability to perform therapeutic play and non‑pharmacological pain management techniques.
