Chief Operating Officer (COO)

About the role

For The People is seeking a strategic and entrepreneurial Chief Operating Officer to lead the organization through its next stage of growth and impact. The COO will partner with the CEO and Chief Strategy Officer to build the operational infrastructure needed to expand across multiple states.

Key responsibilities

• Translate the organization’s vision into operational plans, structures, and resource decisions, overseeing cross‑functional coordination and accountability.
• Provide strategic oversight of financial health, budgeting, forecasting, grant accounting, and audit processes while ensuring compliance and risk management.
• Set direction for people, operations, and technology, including workforce planning, multi‑state employment compliance, cybersecurity, and data protection.
• Lead and develop senior staff such as the Director of Operations and Controller, fostering a high‑performing, values‑aligned workplace.

Required profile

• 12+ years of progressive experience in operations, finance, HR, or organizational leadership, including senior‑level executive roles.
• Proven track record of scaling organizations across multiple states and managing complex regulatory environments, especially in California.
• Experience leading cross‑functional teams and partnering with boards in nonprofit or mission‑driven settings.

What we offer

• Salary range $160,000 – $200,000 per year, based on experience.
