About the role
The At‑Sea Survey Technician supports NOAA Fisheries’ Southeast Fishery‑Independent Survey (SEFIS), conducting reef‑fish surveys aboard vessels and processing data in the laboratory. The role combines field work, video analysis, laboratory processing, and data management throughout the year.
Key responsibilities
- Perform field survey duties on reef‑fish surveys, including deploying and retrieving fish traps equipped with video cameras.
- Collect biological samples, process otoliths and reproductive tissues, and acquire morphometric data.
- Read and analyze trap‑mounted video footage to extract catch data.
- Enter, edit, and manage survey data in databases.
- Conduct data analysis, create GIS‑based spatial distribution maps, and prepare reports, publications, and presentations.
- Support vessel operations by loading/unloading equipment, maintaining gear, and archiving samples.
- Participate in public outreach and education activities.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree in Marine Science or a related field.
- 0–3 years of relevant experience in marine biological sampling or related research.
- Ability to write college‑level reports and deliver oral presentations.
Required skills
- Proficiency with GIS software for spatial mapping.
- Experience using statistical and data‑analysis programs.
- Competence in database management and data entry.
- Familiarity with video analysis tools for trap‑mounted cameras.
- Ability to use standard word‑processing, spreadsheet, and graphics applications.
