About the role
The Associate Director, Research Animal Welfare serves as the Attending Veterinarian for assigned Texas A&M University System members, providing veterinary oversight, compliance support, and programmatic leadership for animal care and use programs.
Key responsibilities
- Provide clinical veterinary consultation, diagnostics, treatments, preventive medicine, and emergency response for research animals.
- Develop, review, and implement animal care and use programs in compliance with USDA, NIH, AAALAC, DoD/ACURO and other regulations.
- Serve as veterinary member or alternate on Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees (IACUCs), reviewing protocols and participating in inspections.
- Support institutions in USDA inspections, OLAW oversight, sponsor reviews, and AAALAC accreditation activities.
- Collaborate with the Director to implement system‑wide veterinary oversight, training, and harmonization initiatives.
Required profile
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.) from an AVMA‑accredited college.
- Minimum five years of progressive experience in laboratory animal medicine, research animal program oversight, or IACUC administration.
- Ability to obtain a Texas veterinary license and willingness to travel up to 50% of the time.
