Associate Director of Policy & Advocacy

About the role

UnCommon Law is seeking an Associate Director of Policy & Advocacy to lead day‑to‑day legislative and regulatory work. Reporting to the Director of Policy & Advocacy, you will translate the organization’s strategy into concrete campaigns, lobbying efforts, and coalition actions that advance reform of California’s parole system.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor, analyze, and report on state legislation and regulations affecting incarcerated populations.
• Develop policy positions, briefing materials, and advocacy tools for internal and external audiences.
• Lead lobbying activities, including meetings with lawmakers, regulators, and coalition partners.
• Coordinate with Litigation, Communications, Development, and other teams to ensure integrated advocacy efforts.
• Represent UnCommon Law at public hearings, policy forums, and stakeholder gatherings.
• Travel frequently to Sacramento, especially during the legislative session, to advance priority bills.

Required profile

• Deep knowledge of California’s legislative and regulatory processes.
• Proven experience in policy research, analysis, and advocacy.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills for diverse audiences.
• Ability to build and sustain relationships with policymakers, community groups, and incarcerated individuals.
• Strong organizational skills and capacity to manage multiple campaigns simultaneously.
