Acute Facility AMBS/OBV Coder (Coder III)

About the role

Optum Insight, part of UnitedHealth Group, is hiring a Coder III for its Health Information Management team in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. The coder applies the right diagnostic and procedural codes to patient records so they can be used for data retrieval, analysis and claims processing. The role works in line with the mission and policies of Dignity Health, TJC, CMS and other regulators, and offers the option to telecommute from anywhere in the U.S.

Key responsibilities

• Assign ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS and CPT-4 codes for Same Day Surgery, IVR, CIVR (specialty) and Observation admissions, and review provider documentation for diagnoses, procedures and reason for visit
• Code ancillary and/or emergency department charts when needed, and enter information into the encoder and abstracting system
• Clarify diagnosis and procedure details through the established query process and correct patient disposition when necessary
• Prioritize work to meet medical record coding KPIs and act as a resource for coding questions
• Meet Coder II performance and quality standards, follow AHIMA ethical coding standards, and assist with OSHPD corrections
• Take part in department meetings and educational events, and help with charge validation and observation calculations

Required profile

• High school diploma
• AHIMA or AAPC accredited coding certification program covering anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, medical terminology, ICD-10 and CPT
• Current coding credential (RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CPC or CPC-H)
• 2+ years of Same Day Surgery, wound care, IVR, CVIR (specialty) and Observation coding experience
• 2+ years of ICD-10 coding experience
• Ability to pass drug screening, background check and coding technical assessment

Required skills

• Use of a PC in a Windows environment, including MS Word and EMR systems
• Preferred: experience with encoder systems such as OptumCAC and Cerner, intermediate Excel, and coding and charge validation
