Water Distribution Worker I – Public Works

About the role

The Water Distribution Worker I supports the City of West Melbourne’s public water system under the direction of the Crew Leader or Supervisor. The position involves maintaining, repairing, and ensuring safe delivery of water to residents, and may require evening, weekend, or on‑call duties.

Key responsibilities

• Perform replacement, cleaning, installation, and repair of water mains, service lines, fire hydrants, and valves.
• Read, record, and service water meters, including making connections, disconnections, and routine maintenance.
• Repair water service line and meter leaks and respond to daily water‑related emergencies.
• Conduct periodic flushing of distribution mains and inspect fire hydrants and valves.
• Participate in the mandatory on‑call rotation and respond to after‑hours emergencies.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent with at least one year of progressive water‑distribution experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Valid Florida Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker endorsement and an acceptable driving record.
• Willingness to obtain a CDL learner’s permit within six months and a full CDL within one year if not already held.
• Availability for mandatory on‑call rotation and ability to respond promptly to emergencies.

Required skills

• Knowledge of plumbing techniques, pipe styles, and pipe fittings.
• Proficiency with light machinery, hand tools, power tools, scanners, and other technical equipment.
• Ability to use computers and relevant software programs for water‑utility operations.
• Skill in reading and recording water‑meter data accurately.
• Capability to work outdoors in varied weather and terrain while handling physical demands.
