Utility Technician – Water & Wastewater Systems

About the role

The Utility Technician provides semi‑skilled construction, maintenance and repair services for the city’s water, reclaimed water and wastewater systems. Working under the Utility Supervisor, the role involves direct customer interaction, emergency response and operation of a wide range of tools and heavy equipment.

Key responsibilities

• Read, troubleshoot, disconnect and reconnect water meters; investigate and resolve water‑quality complaints.
• Operate power tools (cut‑off saw, water‑main tap machine, chainsaw, weedeater, drill, reciprocating saw, pneumatic boring torpedo, generators, air‑powered tools).
• Operate heavy equipment such as front‑end loaders, bobcats, backhoes, forklifts, dump trucks and excavators.
• Maintain on‑call rotation status and respond to emergencies, natural disasters and critical incidents.
• Repair or replace stuck potable and reclaimed water meters, address low flow issues and fix leaks.
• Maintain vehicle cleanliness, refuel, stock inventory, and report repair needs.
• Process work orders, inspect right‑of‑way, locate and mark utility lines, and keep accurate records.
• Perform hydrant flushing, chlorine checks and visual inspections of utility facilities.

Required profile

• Ability to work emergency status and on‑call rotations.
• Physical capability to operate heavy equipment and perform manual labor.
• Strong customer service skills for telephone and in‑person communication.
• Attention to detail for record‑keeping and inventory management.
