Systems Administrator - Windows & Linux

About the role

The Systems Administrator will ensure the reliable operation of Barnard College’s mixed Windows and Linux server environment. Reporting to the Associate Director, Systems, you will support both day‑to‑day operations and strategic projects that improve infrastructure, security, and automation.

Key responsibilities

• Provision, monitor, and maintain hardware, software, applications, and services in line with college policies.
• Monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve incidents affecting servers and applications.
• Plan and recommend hardware and software upgrades.
• Research, test, and propose new server technologies and processes.
• Respond to business‑critical emergencies during and after business hours.
• Collaborate with Barnard and Columbia University technology teams to deliver stable, flexible services.
• Manage both Windows and Linux systems in a mixed environment.

Required profile

• Proficiency with automation and configuration‑management tools such as Ansible and Jenkins.
• Strong scripting experience with PowerShell, Bash, and/or Python.
• Comfortable managing a mixed Windows/Linux server landscape.

• Ability to work remotely while being available on‑site for infrastructure support and meetings.
