Survey Technician – Transportation Generalist (Senior)

About the role

The State of Minnesota Transportation Department is seeking a Survey Technician to join a field survey crew in Fergus Falls. You will perform location, construction and land surveys, combining manual labor with technical tasks while supporting the crew chief.

Key responsibilities

• Act as lead survey worker when the crew lead is absent.
• Set up and operate Real‑Time Kinematic (RTK) GPS and total station equipment.
• Perform data comparison and quality checks from GPS/total station measurements.
• Maintain, calibrate and troubleshoot survey equipment.
• Create and verify survey notes, establish horizontal and vertical control, set and mark stakes, and install right‑of‑way markers.
• Assist with locating lot corners, monuments and section corners.
• Conduct snow and ice duties, including roadway maintenance and winter equipment inspection.
• Support the survey lead with office and field construction activities.

Required profile

• Ability to obtain a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with no air‑brake restriction within six months of hire (permit within three months).
• Full‑time availability, Monday‑Friday, day shift.
• Non‑exempt status under FLSA.

Required skills

• Creation of survey notes and control point establishment.
• Stake setting, marking and right‑of‑way installation.
• Winter equipment handling and roadway maintenance.
• Commercial Driver’s License (Class A/B) qualification.
