Seasonal Facilities & Maintenance Laborer

About the role

The City of Marquette is seeking energetic individuals for a seasonal Facilities & Maintenance Laborer position. Working under the Facilities & Maintenance Supervisor, you will help keep city parks, athletic fields, and other municipal properties clean, safe, and well‑maintained throughout the season.

Key responsibilities

• Operate a variety of power equipment, including lawn mowers, snow blowers, and irrigation systems.
• Maintain turf areas by irrigating, seeding, weeding, raking, and shoveling.
• Perform general grounds duties such as litter pickup, painting, garbage collection, and playground upkeep.
• Clean picnic tables, charcoal grills, and restrooms; monitor cleaning‑supply inventory.
• Assist other crews as assigned and follow all safety protocols.
• Inspect equipment before use, report malfunctions, and keep tools organized.

Required profile

• Ability to work a flexible schedule from mid‑April to mid‑November (up to six months).
• Physical strength and dexterity for lifting and handling moderately heavy objects.
• Valid Michigan driver’s license with a good driving record.
• Good interpersonal skills for interaction with the public and city staff.

Required skills

• Lawn mower operation (push and riding)
• Snow blower operation
• Power tool operation (weed whip, backpack blower, billy‑goat vacuum, leaf vacuum, sod cutter, power edger, garden tiller, turf broom, plate compactor, log splitter)
• Portable irrigation system handling
• Equipment inspection and basic maintenance
