Neonatal Nurse Practitioner / Physician Assistant – PRN

About the role

The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner or Neonatal Physician Assistant provides primary medical management and emergency stabilization for critically ill neonates and infants in the NICU. Working 24/7 on‑site, the role collaborates with physicians, nurses, and support staff to ensure high‑quality, continuous care.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver primary and urgent medical management, including emergency transport of neonatal patients.
• Precept NNP students, teach NICU residents, and provide staff development and education.
• Participate in daily rounds, outcome data collection, and discharge planning.
• Maintain 24/7 in‑house coverage for NICU and high‑risk deliveries.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in nursing (or NNP certificate for pre‑2003 hires).
• Minimum 2 years of related nursing experience.
• Current APRN Nurse Practitioner license in Louisiana with limited prescriptive authority.
• Neonatal Nurse Practitioner certification (NCC) and BLS, NRP, S.T.A.B.L.E. certifications.

Required skills

• Chest tube placement, endotracheal intubation, lumbar puncture, needle thoracotomy.
• Percutaneous central line placement, peripheral artery puncture and cannulation.
• Umbilical artery and vein catheterization, ventricular catheter reservoir aspiration.
• Computer data entry, proficiency with Windows‑style applications.
