Maintenance Specialist - South Pole Station

About the role

Amentum is hiring a Maintenance Specialist for a seasonal contract supporting the National Science Foundation's United States Antarctic Program as part of the Antarctic Support Contract (ASC). The role covers maintenance and construction work, alone or combined, under the supervision of the Preventative Maintenance Foreman (McMurdo/South Pole), Facilities Maintenance Supervisor or Preventative Maintenance Coordinator (Palmer). Tasking depends on prior experience and ASC schedule needs.

Key responsibilities

• Diagnose, repair and perform scheduled preventative maintenance on buildings, systems, equipment, fixtures and infrastructure.
• Manage small maintenance projects in your work area, coordinating other trades, equipment, tools, parts and schedules.
• Perform major overhauls on heating, ventilation, cooling, refrigeration, pumps, kitchen/galley equipment, hoists, compressors and other equipment, including exercise, medical and lab equipment.
• Work from job plans, schematics, blueprints, wiring diagrams, vendor manuals and specifications, and analyse equipment breakdowns.
• Respond to emergency service calls during and outside normal hours, and lead and oversee Utility Technicians.
• Help run a large maintenance crew, fill in for the Preventive Maintenance Foreman, and enforce the preventative maintenance program using the Maximo database.
• Maintain detailed records, logs and accounts, prepare work plans, hazard and safety analyses, and submit quality assurance self-inspections and reports.
• Request spare parts, advise the supervisor on progress and resource needs, and follow SOPs and safety requirements.
• Work outdoors in extreme cold and windy conditions, and deploy to remote research support facilities.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED.
• Five years of facilities maintenance experience, including industrial and/or commercial facilities, preventative and corrective maintenance.
• Experience in refrigeration, HVAC, plumbing and electrical, and fuel oil-fired combustion appliances (South Pole and Palmer).
• Ability to work independently, lift and move heavy items, climb in and out of equipment and work outdoors in extreme cold.
• Medical, dental, drug screening, background checks and federal background check completed; US citizenship required for facility credentials at this location.
• Valid US driver's license; willingness to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods.

Required skills

• Reading and interpreting design drawings, specifications, diagrams and manufacturer troubleshooting guides.
• Written work plans, job hazard analysis and job safety analysis under a permit-to-work system.
• Electrical/electronic and mechanical test equipment, troubleshooting and LOTO procedures.
• Confined space safety, NFPA 70E and OSHA electrical safety knowledge, and PPE use.
• Preferred: Maximo or other CMMS, Microsoft Office, building automation systems, overhead door maintenance, and fuel piping work.
