Legal Counsel – In‑House Lawyer for Privacy‑Focused Mobile Carrier

About the role

As the first in‑house lawyer at Cape, you will operate at the intersection of law and product development, providing legal guidance across regulatory, government contracts, IP, commercial contracts, AI, employment and more. Reporting to the Head of Operations, you will help build a scalable legal function from the ground up.

Key responsibilities

• Own all legal needs across the company, including interactions with regulatory agencies, government and commercial contracts, employment matters, and IP risks.
• Establish, scale, and manage internal legal processes, templates (e.g., MSAs, NDAs) and compliance frameworks (e.g., FCC, state licensing).
• Manage a lean roster of outside counsel, directing strategy and execution.
• Provide actionable guidance to engineering, sales, and other internal teams.
• Help shape the legal function to support rapid growth and evolving business challenges.

Required profile

• J.D. from an accredited law school and active bar membership in good standing.
• 6‑8+ years of legal experience, preferably with top‑tier law firm training.
• Demonstrated ability to thrive in a fast‑moving startup environment and earn the trust of cross‑functional teams.
• Builder mindset – comfortable being the first to own a function and leveraging AI tools to increase efficiency.
• Exposure to government contracts is a plus.
