Firefighter Cadet (Firefighter 3/C)

About the role

The Firefighter 3/C Cadet program trains new recruits to become fully qualified Firefighters and Emergency Medical Technicians for the City of Albuquerque. Candidates will complete a rigorous 19‑ or 28‑week Fire Academy and learn the policies, procedures, and operational guidelines of Albuquerque Fire Rescue.

Key responsibilities

• Learn and apply fire suppression, wildland firefighting, and hazardous‑materials response techniques.
• Deliver emergency medical services as an EMT‑Basic or Paramedic.
• Participate in technical rescue operations and incident command.
• Maintain physical fitness and meet all academic standards required by the academy.
• Follow city and department safety protocols and standards.

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED.
• Must be at least 18 years old by the academy start date.
• U.S. citizen or legal resident; veterans must provide DD‑214.
• Valid driver’s license (Class E New Mexico license required within 30 days of hiring).
• Ability to obtain or hold an EMT license (training provided for those without).
