Firearm and Toolmark Examiner

About the role

Amentum is seeking a Firearm/Toolmark Examiner based in Forest Park, GA, supporting exploitation missions to both CONUS and OCONUS locations. This is a full-time role requiring travel and deployment as needed. The position is advertised until filled.

Key responsibilities

• Examine evidence and forensic materials and render all items safe.
• Examine items for signs of make, model, modifications, place of origin, manufacturer, and serial numbers.
• Identify unique or indicative tool marks using magnification, etching, x-ray and photographic techniques.
• Capture still images of evidence items and key portions to support analysis, conclusions and documentation.
• Submit findings to national databases and perform forensic examination of tool marks on weapons and IED-related evidence.
• Produce detailed notes and reports, and perform technical and administrative reviews (AR/TR) of other examiners' casework.
• Perform quality checks of instruments and reagents and collaborate with team members and other forensic staff.

Required profile

• 4 years of independent experience in a forensic laboratory doing firearms and toolmark evidence comparison and analysis; training does not count toward this.
• Experience in technical and administrative case file review.
• 20/20 vision or correctable 20/20 vision with no color vision deficiency.
• Must obtain a DoD Top Secret/SCI security clearance (US citizenship required); ability to obtain and maintain an active US passport.
• Ability to travel CONUS and OCONUS and pass a medical assessment per customer requirements.

Required skills

• Safe firearm handling, including maintenance, gunsmithing, reloading, ballistic performance, bullet casting, shotgun patterning and firearm manufacturing methods.
• Techniques to visualize, evaluate and compare firearms, bullets and cartridge cases.
• Use of microscopes and measuring devices for comparing ammunition components, firearms and toolmarks.
• Serial number restoration.
