Director of Media and Public Relations

About the role

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is seeking a Director of Media and Public Relations to lead its media strategy and execution. Reporting to the Chief Communications Officer, the role will develop annual PR plans that boost brand visibility, audience diversification, and revenue goals.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement comprehensive PR and media strategies in partnership with senior leadership.
• Write, edit, and manage production of press releases, blog posts, and media pitches.
• Coordinate media site visits, interview arrangements, and respond to media inquiries.
• Handle sensitive or controversial issues, preparing talking points and presentations for senior leaders.
• Analyze communication effectiveness and report metrics to guide future initiatives.

Required profile

• Extensive knowledge of public relations principles, media contacts, and museum programming.
• Proficiency with technology, media‑management, reporting, and project‑management applications.
• Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to work under tight deadlines.
• Experience negotiating media partnerships that deliver measurable coverage and financial benefits.
