About the role
The Clinical/Medical Laboratory Scientist performs specimen receipt and preparation, conducts microbiology laboratory tests, and ensures accurate results for diagnosis and treatment. The role includes quality control, equipment maintenance, phlebotomy as needed, and maintaining patient confidentiality.
Key responsibilities
- Perform, develop, and interpret routine and specialized microbiology laboratory tests independently within established time frames.
- Analyze and record quality control, instrument maintenance, and troubleshooting, taking corrective action when results are out of control.
- Adhere to regulatory compliance, accreditation standards, and safety guidelines, including proficiency testing.
- Participate in performance improvement, data collection, and inventory management to support cost‑reduction initiatives.
- Adapt communication and procedures to respect patient privacy and specific patient populations.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, medical laboratory science, clinical laboratory science, or a related scientific field; transcript required.
- Current Clinical Lab Scientist Generalist license in the state of practice (or obtain within 180 days of hire).
- ASCP, AMT, or AAB generalist certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist/Technologist within 90 days of hire; categorical certification if working in an Academic Medical Center.
- Proficiency with Windows applications, data entry, and computer skills for patient information retrieval.
- Effective verbal and written communication, analytical and problem‑solving abilities, and good judgment.
Required skills
- Windows operating system and standard office applications.
- Laboratory information systems for data entry and retrieval.
- Phlebotomy techniques.
- Calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of microbiology laboratory equipment.
