Carpenter - Seasonal Antarctic Support Contract

About the role

Amentum is hiring a seasonal contract Carpenter to support the National Science Foundation's United States Antarctic Program under the Antarctic Support Contract (ASC) at the South Pole Station. Carpenters perform maintenance or construction work, or a combination of both, under the supervision of the Carpenter Foreman, PM Coordinator or Facilities Maintenance Supervisor. Tasking depends on prior experience and the ASC schedule.

Key responsibilities

• Perform rough framing and finish carpentry with a variety of materials and tools
• Carry out construction work in undeveloped, remote areas and in adverse conditions, including outdoors in wind and extreme cold
• Track material usage and update inventory records, coordinate materials and support from other departments
• Respond promptly to emergency service calls inside and outside normal hours
• Document hours worked, tasks, materials and processes accurately
• Follow design drawings, specifications and wiring diagrams, and follow or help create Standard Operating Procedures
• Identify hazards, unsafe conditions and code violations, and take part in safety programs and community programs
• Use computer-based labor, material and maintenance tracking applications, and possibly deploy to remote research facilities (McMurdo only)

Required profile

• High school diploma or GED
• At least four years of documented carpentry experience, including rough framing and finish carpentry
• Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods, with medical, dental, drug screening, background checks and US citizenship (required for facility credentials)
• Valid US driver's license; able to lift and work in extreme cold

Required skills

• Reading and interpreting design drawings, specifications and diagrams
• Prior computer experience and willingness to learn tracking applications
• Preferred: wilderness first responder, first aid training, metal stud framing, drywall finishing, commercial construction experience, remote work experience, and Microsoft Office proficiency
