Backend Engineer (Level 3)

About the role

Snap Inc. is seeking a Backend Engineer (Level 3) to design, build, and operate critical, highly‑scalable services that power core Snapchat experiences. You will collaborate across product and engineering teams to deliver innovative solutions while maintaining a strong focus on reliability and privacy.

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement, and operate essential backend services such as user identity, friend graph, and core persistence layers.
• Work with cross‑functional teams to understand product requirements, evaluate trade‑offs, and deliver robust solutions.
• Test, debug, and ensure high quality of code and services.
• Advocate and apply best practices for availability, scalability, operational excellence, and cost management.
• Participate in incident response, hot‑fix investigations, and system operational tasks.

Required profile

• Experience building backend services or distributed systems at significant scale.
• Ability to independently deliver medium‑sized features spanning multiple pull requests.
• Understanding of operational aspects of production systems and willingness to engage in incident resolution.
• Strong collaboration skills and a proven track record of operating highly‑available systems.
• BS/BA in Computer Science or equivalent technical experience.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Java, Kotlin, Swift, Python, or C++.
• Experience with NoSQL databases, Memcache/Redis.
• Familiarity with Kubernetes and cloud platforms such as Google Cloud or AWS.
• Knowledge of large‑scale microservices, distributed systems, and cloud computing.
• Understanding of infrastructure design, security, networking, and data storage.
