Auditor – Abandoned Property (NY State Comptroller)

About the role

The Office of the New York State Comptroller is seeking auditors to support the investigation and reporting of unclaimed property held by banks, insurance companies, utilities, stockbrokers, and other entities. The role involves ensuring accurate remittance of unclaimed assets to the State Comptroller and requires regular travel within the New York metropolitan area and occasional out‑of‑state trips.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in audits and investigations of organizations that may hold unclaimed property.
• Verify completeness and accuracy of unclaimed property reports.
• Prepare and submit remittance documentation to the State Comptroller.
• Travel daily within Metro‑NYC and undertake weekly overnight trips as needed.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree with at least 24 semester credit hours in accounting and/or auditing, or a master’s/doctoral degree with the same credit requirement.
• For trainee levels: up to one year of professional accounting/auditing experience; for Auditor 1 level: two years of experience (or one year with a graduate degree).
• Eligibility on the appropriate civil service list, 55 b/c program eligibility, or transfer eligibility under Sections 70.1/70.4.
• Ability to travel regularly within the NYC area and occasionally out of state.
