At-Sea Survey Technician / EM Reviewer

About the role
The At‑Sea Survey Technician/EM Reviewer will support NOAA’s SEFSC Population and Ecosystems Monitoring Division, specifically the Gulf and Caribbean Reef Fish Branch. Working aboard NOAA research vessels and small research boats, the incumbent will collect biological data, annotate video footage, and ensure data quality for federal and state agencies.
Key responsibilities
- Serve as Survey Technician on NOAA ships and small research vessels for reef‑fish surveys.
- Perform pre‑ and post‑survey equipment inventory, preparation, loading, cleaning, and maintenance.
- Collect biological and environmental samples and log data according to SOPs.
- Annotate reef‑fish video footage using VIAME software on Google Cloud Platform.
- Conduct human‑in‑the‑loop review and correction of automated video annotations.
- Enter and upload annotated data into GCRF Oracle databases and perform QA/QC.
- Maintain annotation tracking sheets and manage tasks via GitHub.
- Participate in public outreach activities such as school visits and science fairs.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree in Marine Science or a related field (volunteer experience valued).
- Proficiency with word processing, database, statistical, and graphics programs; ability to write college‑level reports.
- Strong knowledge of fish, invertebrate, and protected‑species identification keys, especially reef taxa of the Gulf of America.
- Understanding of endangered or threatened species.
- Compliance with NOAA health questionnaire and tuberculosis screening; current tetanus vaccine required.
