Associate Attorney - Toxic Tort Defense

About the role

Segal McCambridge, a nationally recognized trial-focused litigation firm, is hiring an Associate Attorney to join its Toxic Tort (asbestos) defense team in Chicago. The position suits ambitious litigators who want hands-on experience, mentorship from experienced trial lawyers and a hybrid arrangement with in-office days and remote flexibility.

Key responsibilities

• Manage a caseload focused on toxic tort (asbestos) defense, handling cases from inception through resolution or trial with partners.
• Take part in depositions, court appearances and other litigation activities.
• Contribute to strategy discussions and case planning.
• Work within a national network of trial-tested attorneys.

Required profile

• Licensed in Illinois, active and in good standing; admission in Missouri or Indiana is a plus.
• 1-5 years of experience in civil defense litigation.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines, with strong interpersonal and presentation skills.
• Experience with mediations or arbitrations is a plus but not required.

• Drafting pleadings, motions and discovery documents.
• Taking and defending depositions.
• Legal research and case analysis.
• Communication with clients and insurance carriers.
• Strong writing and advocacy skills.
