Principal Payments Engineer

About the role

Payabli is building a next‑generation payments infrastructure for vertical SaaS platforms. As the founding hire for the Payments Core team, you will own the core money‑movement stack that powers payment acceptance, issuance, batching, funding, reconciliation and ledgering across thousands of partners and paypoints.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement systems that guarantee exactly‑once payment execution at scale, handling partial failures and retries.
• Define and enforce API contracts for internal and external payment services.
• Consolidate distributed payment functionality into a single, highly reliable core platform.
• Establish testable correctness properties and reliability standards for money‑movement components.
• Collaborate with the CTO and future engineering hires to set the technical foundation for the payments organization.

Required profile

• Proven experience operating payments infrastructure handling tens to hundreds of billions in GMV.
• Deep understanding of the failure modes that appear at large scale and ability to anticipate and mitigate them.
• Entrepreneurial mindset comfortable with ambiguity and making decisions with incomplete information.
• Strong ownership mentality and willingness to challenge existing assumptions.

Required skills

• Payments systems architecture and operations.
• Design of fault‑tolerant, high‑throughput distributed services.
• API design and contract enforcement.
• Experience with compliance frameworks such as PCI DSS and SOC 2.
