Data Scientist, AI & Generative AI (Hybrid)

About the role

John Hancock, part of Manulife Financial, is looking for a Data Scientist focused on AI and Generative AI within its U.S. insurance business. The role is hybrid and based in Boston, MA, and involves working on high-impact initiatives that affect business outcomes, together with business leaders, technology teams and a global network of more than 160 data scientists.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and deploy AI and Generative AI solutions that address real business challenges.
• Build and operationalize machine learning and large language model (LLM) solutions from concept through production.
• Partner with business stakeholders to define opportunities, gather requirements, formulate hypotheses and deliver measurable results.
• Develop proof-of-concepts, pilot programs and enterprise-scale AI applications.
• Implement prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) patterns and modern AI architectures.
• Generate business insights through data exploration, experimentation and advanced analytics.
• Build scalable data pipelines and AI workflows, monitor and improve model performance, and communicate findings to technical and non-technical audiences.

Required profile

• Master's or PhD in Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Physics or a related quantitative field.
• 2+ years of industry experience developing and deploying AI and Generative AI solutions.
• Ability to turn business problems into scalable AI solutions.

Required skills

• Strong Python and SQL.
• Experience designing and running data science experiments and machine learning projects.
• Preferred: Pandas, Scikit-learn, Keras, NLTK, LangChain, Semantic Kernel, SQL and NoSQL databases, NLP tasks, vector databases, embeddings, RAG, agentic AI, MLOps, CI/CD, Git, and cloud AI development (Azure, Databricks).
