Intellectual Property Liaison

About the role

The Intellectual Property Liaison acts as the bridge between 3M’s research labs and the Office of Intellectual Property Counsel, ensuring that innovative ideas are properly documented, evaluated, and protected. This position supports global IP generation activities and helps manage a portion of 3M’s patent portfolio.

Key responsibilities

• Facilitate the flow of invention disclosures from researchers to IP counsel, guiding them through evaluation, triage, and patent filing.
• Use IP asset‑management tools such as Anaqua to document and track inventions.
• Maintain and update the patent portfolio database, monitoring pending applications and issued patents.
• Conduct regular portfolio reviews to align patents with business needs and identify rationalization opportunities.
• Provide advice, answer questions, and deliver training on patent processes and IP best practices to R&D staff.
• Stay informed on changes in patent law and communicate relevant updates.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in a scientific or engineering discipline (e.g., chemistry, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, material/polymer science).
• At least three years of experience in a related field, such as private industry, government, or military research.
