Assistant Deputy Counsel – Litigation

About the role

The New York State Unified Court System is looking for an Assistant Deputy Counsel specializing in litigation to join the Office of Court Administration. The role supports the development and implementation of court policies and provides legal guidance across the Unified Court System.

Key responsibilities

• Assist with trial and appellate litigation in federal and state courts and before agencies involving UCS policies, practices, and personnel.
• Handle employee disciplinary matters and represent the office in court and hearing appearances.
• Analyze complex legal issues arising from proposed administrative rules and legislation.
• Respond to subpoenas, freedom of information requests, and related inquiries.
• Serve as liaison with the New York State Office of the Attorney General on litigation matters.
• Undertake additional assignments as directed.

Required profile

• Admission to the New York State Bar.
• At least five years of legal experience, with substantial litigation exposure in court and administrative proceedings.
• Strong written and oral communication abilities.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and the capacity to mentor less‑experienced attorneys.

What we offer

• Base salary of $130,061 plus $4,920 location pay, with potential higher salary for eligible current or former NYS employees.
