About the role
The Youth Education Specialist (ESOL) will join the International Rescue Committee’s Youth Education team in New York City, delivering high‑quality English language instruction and support to refugee and immigrant youth. Working closely with the Youth Education Supervisor, the specialist will design curriculum, teach classes, and oversee program evaluation and intern coordination.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and continuously improve the YESOL curriculum, including academic English and test‑preparation components.
- Prepare instructional materials such as slide decks and updated syllabi for each semester.
- Manage intake processes, conduct baseline, midline, and endline assessments, and collaborate with parents and teachers to identify student needs.
- Teach multiple YESOL classes for middle‑school and high‑school students, including beginner, intermediate, and test‑prep groups, as well as Saturday parent ESOL sessions.
- Track attendance, maintain daily case notes, collect qualitative feedback, and synthesize data for annual reporting.
- Recruit, hire, and supervise Youth ESOL interns, delegating tasks and providing professional development opportunities.
- Support the Mini Newcomer Youth Spring Academy (Mini NYSA) by assisting with instruction and field trips during school‑break programs.
Required profile
- Experience teaching English as a Second Language to youth, preferably in refugee or immigrant contexts.
- Demonstrated ability to design and adapt curriculum to diverse learner needs.
- Strong organizational skills for managing assessments, attendance records, and program data.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills for working with families, teachers, and program staff.
- Experience supervising interns or junior staff members.
