Visiting Military Officer

About the role

The Foreign Policy Research Institute (FDD) is seeking a full‑time U.S. military officer to join its Center on Military and Political Power (CMPP) as a Visiting Military Officer. The fellowship lasts 6 months to 1 year (shorter terms of 6 weeks are possible) and can be conducted on‑site in Washington, D.C. or through a hybrid remote arrangement.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct research on U.S. defense strategies, policies, and capabilities.
• Author analytical pieces for newspapers, journals, and online outlets.
• Present research findings at FDD events and external venues.
• Plan, execute, and attend meetings, briefings, and networking opportunities.
• Support day‑to‑day research activities of the CMPP.

Required profile

• U.S. military officer holding rank O‑3 to O‑6.
• Graduate degree in a relevant discipline.
• Excellent analytical, research, and writing abilities.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Required skills

• Strong research and analytical skills.
• Professional writing and publication experience.
