Staff Software Engineer

About the role

Cambly is building the world’s largest English‑learning marketplace and is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to drive the technical direction of its products. You will own the end‑to‑end delivery of backend systems, collaborate with product, design and engineering, and help shape AI‑first development practices.

Key responsibilities

• Own the product platform, leading design and delivery of APIs, data models and services in production.
• Make architectural decisions, balancing scalability, extensibility and rapid learning.
• Ship features from technical design through launch, including AI‑driven learning experiences.
• Contribute across the stack – frontend, mobile and data – using AI coding tools to stay effective.
• Raise the technical bar through architecture reviews, best‑practice adoption and mentorship of engineers.

Required profile

• 7+ years of software engineering experience with a track record of owning systems to production.
• Deep backend expertise in API design, data modeling and scalable production services.
• Comfortable directing AI coding tools and focusing on design and review.
• Product mindset with strong communication skills for both technical and non‑technical audiences.
