Software Engineer - Backend

About the role

Cardless is looking for an experienced backend engineer to join its exceptional team. You will design, build, and scale the systems that power its co‑branded credit card platform across applications, accounts, transactions, fraud, risk, and rewards.

Key responsibilities

• Design and build scalable, secure, high‑performance backend services supporting Cardless’s core financial products.
• Participate in architectural discussions and evolve the platform as it grows.
• Own projects from requirements gathering through production, including testing, deployment, and maintenance.
• Collaborate with product managers, designers, engineers, and external partners to deliver high‑quality features quickly.
• Identify and drive improvements in reliability, observability, performance, and developer experience.
• Provide technical guidance and thought partnership across the engineering organization.

Required profile

• 5+ years of industry experience designing and implementing backend systems at scale.
• Strong understanding of distributed systems, APIs, databases, and infrastructure fundamentals.
• Proficiency with a modern backend language such as Java or Python.
• Track record of delivering complex technical projects end‑to‑end.
• Deep expertise in at least one backend domain (e.g., databases, scaling systems, distributed systems).
