Staff Counsel

About the role

The NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) is seeking an experienced attorney to join its General Counsel Division as Staff Counsel. In this role you will support the agency’s mission to protect consumers and promote fair business practices across New York City.

Key responsibilities

• Investigate and prosecute businesses that violate NYC licensing and consumer protection laws.
• Develop and execute large‑scale regulatory enforcement plans.
• Conduct legal research, draft memoranda, and prepare correspondence for respondents and consumers.
• Represent DCWP at the New York City Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings (OATH) and in state court, including taking depositions and presenting cases.
• Draft and negotiate settlement agreements arising from enforcement actions.
• Oversee regulatory compliance projects and provide guidance to businesses.
• Participate in agency outreach, training, and public education initiatives.

Required profile

• Admission to the New York State Bar.
• At least one year of satisfactory legal experience in the United States, or six months of experience following admission to any state bar.
• Demonstrated ability to manage complex litigation and regulatory matters.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
