Senior Director of Facilities, Buildings & Grounds, and Capital Outlay

About the role

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is seeking a senior leader to direct all aspects of facilities, buildings, grounds and capital outlay. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Senior Director will provide strategic oversight for the museum’s physical assets, ensuring they remain safe, functional and sustainable for visitors and staff.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and execute a long‑term facilities master plan covering historic structures, contemporary buildings, public spaces and specialized conservation environments.
• Lead capital development projects from conception through completion, managing budgets, schedules and contractor performance.
• Oversee daily operations of building systems, grounds maintenance, security, utilities and environmental services.
• Ensure compliance with safety, accessibility, preservation and environmental regulations.
• Manage a multidisciplinary team of engineers, architects, maintenance staff and external consultants.
• Collaborate with senior leadership to align facilities strategy with the museum’s mission and financial goals.

Required profile

• Proven senior‑level experience in facilities, building operations or capital project management, preferably in a cultural or public institution.
• Demonstrated ability to lead large, complex campuses with historic and modern elements.
• Strong financial acumen with experience overseeing multi‑million‑dollar budgets.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder‑management skills.
