Rule of Law Officer – Temporary Position

About the role

The Department of Peace Operations is seeking a temporary Rule of Law Officer to support the Office of the Police Adviser at UN Headquarters. The incumbent will provide strategic policy advice, develop police deployment guidelines, and coordinate rule‑of‑law initiatives across peacekeeping missions.

Key responsibilities

• Develop policies, guidelines, directives and procedures for police deployment in peace operations, including rapid‑deployment protocols.
• Provide timely strategic police advice to the Police Adviser and senior UN officials, incorporating political considerations.
• Coordinate collection of conflict‑related information and maintain situational awareness for the Division.
• Assist in preparing and implementing the Police Division’s work plans and monitor their execution.
• Draft memoranda, notes and other issuances for UN bodies, Member States and regional organisations.
• Review and update SOPs for the Office of the Police Adviser and establish standard communication processes.
• Prepare briefing materials, talking points and inputs for senior‑staff meetings and policy documents.
• Participate in working groups on rule of law and security sector reform, providing police‑related inputs.
• Contribute to the development of principles and guidelines for capacity building of host‑state police institutions.
• Support lessons‑learned activities and prepare related documentation.
