About the role

Anthropic Labs accelerates internal AI projects from research breakthroughs to market‑ready products. As Engineering Manager you will lead a small, high‑performing team of software engineers building early‑stage AI capabilities, fostering an environment of rapid experimentation, learning, and psychological safety.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and coach a team through zero‑to‑one development, rewarding experimentation over fixed outcomes.
• Hire, develop, and retain versatile engineers who thrive in ambiguity and can shift across problem spaces.
• Partner with designers, product managers, and researchers to align on direction, execution, and productization.
• Establish structured processes for hypothesis testing, kill‑decisions, and extracting learnings from successes and failures.
• Facilitate collaboration between Labs engineers and Anthropic research teams.
• Provide clear feedback, support growth, and maintain team morale amid frequent project shifts.
• Drive adoption of Labs prototypes to inform broader company product strategy.

Required profile

• 5+ years of engineering management experience in ambiguous, early‑stage environments.
• Strong technical background as an individual contributor, ideally with startup or founding engineer experience.
• Proven ability to create psychological safety and help teams navigate uncertainty without burnout.
• Experience building and retaining generalist teams that adapt as priorities shift.
• Exceptional interpersonal intelligence to guide rapid pivots while maintaining trust.
• Strategic thinking to identify high‑potential research breakthroughs and viable product paths.
• Ability to communicate the impact of Labs work to leadership and the broader company.
