Director & Counsel, Global Litigation & Investigations

About the role

American Express is seeking a seasoned legal leader to direct its Global Litigation & Investigations function. The role will oversee a broad portfolio of consumer and commercial litigation, guiding strategy and risk mitigation across the organization.

Key responsibilities

• Manage a dynamic portfolio of consumer and commercial litigation and pre‑litigation disputes handled by the Center for Cardmember and Merchant Litigation.
• Develop and implement litigation strategies, including dispute analysis, early case assessments, negotiations, and case resolutions.
• Build efficiencies and impactful approaches across the internal litigation portfolio.
• Provide root‑cause analyses, mitigation strategies, and regular reporting of litigation metrics to senior leadership.
• Deliver litigation risk‑mitigation training and advice to business lawyers and clients, reviewing contracts and related documents as needed.
• Collaborate with a team of attorneys and paralegals to achieve risk‑management goals and foster professional growth.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree and J.D.; admitted to practice law in the relevant jurisdiction.
• 10+ years of experience in general litigation, with a focus on commercial and consumer finance litigation and trial work.
• Proven leadership experience, both direct and indirect.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
