About the role
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is seeking an Administrative Law Judge to conduct adjudicatory hearings under the Controlled Substances Act. Based in Arlington, Virginia, the ALJ will preside over complex administrative proceedings that impact federal drug enforcement policy.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct administrative enforcement and rulemaking hearings in accordance with the Controlled Substances Act, Title II of the Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act of 1970, and the Administrative Procedure Act.
- Preside over pre‑hearing procedures, motion practice, and formal hearings as the assigned presiding officer.
- Draft and sign all orders and recommended decisions, and certify hearing records for final agency action.
- Adjudicate registration and scheduling matters, including application and revocation actions for controlled substance registrations.
- Maintain efficient operation of the assigned Adjudication Unit, including database updates, calendar management, and workload reporting.
- Travel as required to conduct hearings throughout the United States.
Required profile
- U.S. citizen.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a background and/or security clearance.
- Male applicants born after 12‑31‑1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
- Subject to drug testing as a designated position.
- Must possess and maintain the highest level of character and conduct.
