Administrative Law Judge – California Department of Social Services

About the role

The California Department of Social Services (CDSS) seeks an experienced Administrative Law Judge to preside over independent, impartial due‑process hearings across multiple program areas. This permanent, full‑time position offers a hybrid work environment and the opportunity to influence state policy through legally sound decisions.

Key responsibilities

• Preside over hearings for programs such as CalWORKs, CalFresh, Medi‑Cal, IHSS, and Covered California.
• Interpret and apply federal and state statutes, regulations, and department policies.
• Rule on objections, subpoenas, postponement requests, and set continuances.
• Produce timely, legally correct written decisions and maintain hearing records.
• Communicate with counties, claimants, and stakeholders to ensure an efficient hearing process.
• Identify and address inconsistencies between case law and existing policies.

Required profile

• Juris Doctor (JD) degree and active admission to a state bar.
• Significant experience conducting administrative hearings or similar judicial functions.
• Demonstrated ability to handle complex, sensitive cases with impartiality.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
