Yard Operator I – Production Operations

About the role

The Yard Operator supports daily yard operations by handling scrap material, operating equipment, and ensuring safety and quality standards are met. This position is essential for maintaining efficient material flow and customer satisfaction.

Key responsibilities

• Operate loaders and material handling cranes to load and unload scrap while adhering to quality standards.
• Inspect incoming scrap for radiation, grade, and quality; quarantine and report any non‑conforming material.
• Communicate findings with the scale, supervisor, coworkers, and customers regarding material quality and shipping requirements.
• Perform routine equipment care, assist with monthly inventory counts, and support maintenance repairs.
• Assist in non‑ferrous processing, baler operation, and material segregation for products such as copper, brass, and aluminum.

Required profile

• High school education preferred; willingness to develop skills and knowledge.
• Ability to work safely in a yard environment and follow Gerdau safety, environmental, and procedural guidelines.
• Strong communication skills for interacting with scale operators, supervisors, and customers.

Required skills

• Operation of material handling crane or loader.
• Scrap inspection and grading, including radiation scanning.
• Basic equipment maintenance and routine care.
• Experience or willingness to learn non‑ferrous material segregation and baler operation.
