Welder Internship

About the role

Highway Machine Co. (HMC), located about 3 miles south of Princeton, runs a hands-on welding internship program for high school and college students from the surrounding Indiana counties. The company trains students who are already enrolled in a welding program, with the aim of building a long-term relationship and supporting them through trade school or a full-time career.

For high school students, internships are usually scheduled during the second half of the school day in the final semester; schedules can be adjusted around trade school classes.

What you will learn

• Fitting and assembly of parts to make large gears and components
• Sub arc welding setups, flat and vertical welding, and weld inspection for size and defects
• FCAW, SAW, flame cutting and air arcing
• Magnetic particle testing
• Part processing in the Painting and Handling department, including deburring, painting, cleaning and shot peening
• Safe operation of overhead cranes and forklifts, and inspection of rigging before use

Required profile

• Currently enrolled in a welding program
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
• Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn and follow safe work practices

Required skills

• Basic understanding of blueprint reading and welding principles
• Ability to use a tape measure and to lay out a part
• Proficiency in basic mathematics
