Utility Plant Operator I – University of Northern Colorado

About the role

The University of Northern Colorado seeks a Utility Plant Operator I to ensure continuous delivery of high‑temperature hot water for domestic use, heating, and air‑conditioning across all campus buildings. This full‑time, on‑site position operates 24/7, 365 days a year, supporting the university’s heat plant and assisting the HVAC shop as needed.

Key responsibilities

• Visually inspect, monitor, and record hourly readings of boilers, pumps, air compressors, compression tank pressures, and outside air temperature (≈50% of time).
• Conduct water chemical analysis and treatment for boilers, city water, system water, cooling tower water, and water softeners; adjust programs to maintain proper balance (≈10%).
• Maintain a clean and safe environment for equipment and control computers (≈20%).
• Perform preventative maintenance on a daily, monthly, and annual schedule based on equipment usage (≈20%).
• Assist the HVAC shop with related tasks and ensure reliable operation of all heat‑plant equipment.

Required profile

• Current Colorado residency.
• Four (4) years of relevant experience in utility plant operations or an equivalent mix of education, apprenticeship, and experience.
• Valid driver’s license.
