University Police Officer II – Lateral or Retiree

About the role

The University of Maryland Department of Public Safety is seeking experienced police officers to join its campus law‑enforcement team as University Police Officer II. This position is open to lateral hires and retirees who hold a valid police certification and are ready to serve the College Park community.

Key responsibilities

• Patrol designated campus areas by vehicle and on foot.
• Respond to calls for assistance, emergencies, and incidents.
• Apprehend, detain, process, and arrest individuals violating Maryland vehicle and criminal laws.
• Interact with students, faculty, staff, and visitors to build rapport and ensure safety.
• Testify in court as required.
• Work rotating shifts, including weekends, nights, and holidays, and be available for emergency call‑backs.

Required profile

• Non‑provisional police officer certification from the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission or comparable state certification.
• Successful completion of a Police Field Training Program and a probationary period with a police agency.
• Minimum age of 21 at academy graduation and U.S. citizenship.
• Physical fitness meeting department standards and vision correctable to 20/20.
• No felony convictions and a clean background.
• Demonstrated good character, sound judgment, honesty, reliability, integrity, and strong communication skills.

Required skills

• Valid Maryland non‑commercial Class C driver’s license.
