About the role
Shermco is seeking a remote Traveling Automation Engineer to support mission‑critical power‑system environments, primarily large‑scale data centers. The role involves extensive travel (up to 75% or more) to configure, commission, and test automation and protection controls for substations and industrial facilities.
Key responsibilities
- Configure and integrate substation automation platforms such as MicroSCADA.
- Engineer, test, and commission IEC 61850 systems, including MMS, GOOSE, and IED configuration.
- Develop HMI screens and support SCADA database setup.
- Program and test protection relays and IEDs (Hitachi, SEL, or equivalents) using vendor tools.
- Program and validate RTUs (e.g., RTU560), including logic, communication mapping, and point‑to‑point testing.
- Configure industrial Ethernet switches, VLANs, PRP, and perform network troubleshooting.
- Integrate communication protocols such as DNP3, IEC 104, Modbus, and SNMP.
- Interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, and single‑line diagrams for installation and troubleshooting.
- Use tools like Wireshark for network analysis and apply power‑system protection concepts during commissioning.
Required profile
- Safety‑focused professional with strong knowledge of automation and protection systems.
- Experience in field commissioning of substation automation equipment.
- Ability to read and work from electrical schematics and single‑line diagrams.
- Strong problem‑solving skills and attention to detail.
